“Wherefore be ye not unwise but understanding what the will of the Lord is.”
Ephesians 5:17
There is this age long conversation of the perfect will of God vs the permissive will of God- a conversation that cannot be fully captured in 600 words. However, to put things in perspective, let’s consider this…
Getting to an unknown destination with a map will be more straightforward, fearless, faster, and safer option. The danger of travelling to an unknown destination without a map can lead to risks while taking the wrong route. It can lead to a waste of the most important resource- TIME. It is even possible to miss the destination altogether- a waste of TIME and LIFE.
The perfect will of God is simply travelling with His original map, aligning with God’s original desires. The permissive will is travelling without the map but hoping to get to the destination- making choices and decisions along the way by logic and probability and inviting God to endorse your ways, stretching the limits of His grace.
We live in a world where speed is the goal. But speed in the wrong direction is not progress.
We try to save time by doing things as long as God permits but we lose time and life.
Just to be clear, the permissive will of God is not the ideal. The result is that though we can escape, it will come with severe consequences. We cannot play with fire and not expect to not get burnt.
There is a way that seems right unto a man, but the end are the ways of death. We should avoid the temptation of making decisions based on our feelings of what is right or deciding by popular demand. Our best bet is to work in God’s perfect will. God is not a bully. He will not force us to obey Him but our living a fulfilled life is tied to knowing and obeying His perfect will.
What is the way forward?
It is not God’s desire that His perfect will remains a mystery. We can know His will through His Word. We therefore must SEARCH THE SCRIPTURE for in it we will get directions and as a bonus, we will enjoy speed.
In a world where there are lots of priorities, permit me to make a recommendation…
20 minutes!
A wise man said if he is given one hour to cut a tree, he will spend more time sharpening the axe before cutting. As we start our day, can we do 20 minutes minimum every day to pray, study, meditate and get the map for the day? It is better to labor to enter into His rest than labour without finding rest.
Just 20 minutes!
The Word of God provides the clearest revelation of His will. How about 20 minutes of studying a scripture for a start? I am sure that 20 minutes will prove too small as we grow to become kings searching out his will on any matter (Prov 25: 2). Let us go back to the basics- 20 minutes for a start.
