The Bible is a firm foundation, the solid rock on which we stand. Ancient in text but ever relevant and accurate, it is full of mysteries, divine wisdom, and light. Many have tried to disprove it and failed, often becoming believers themselves. John 1:1 tells us, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.”
One of Satan’s end-time strategies is to create spiritual apathy by slowly removing the Bible from our hearts. Psalm 119:11 states, “Your word have I hidden in my heart that I may not sin against You.” Yet we wonder why the world, and even the church, is filled with sin. Before the Bible was ever taken out of schools, it was first removed from our homes. Today, false doctrines run rampant, and many are deceived because we no longer read our Bibles (Hosea 4:6). In Matthew 4, Jesus showed us that the only way to resist the devil is by applying the Word of God. As Christians, our spiritual strength depends on our knowledge of Scripture. Without studying the Bible, our prayers lack alignment with God’s will, as James 4:3 warns of praying “amiss.”
Unbelievers do not read the Bible as expected, but how can we— the children of God, those who claim to love the Father—abandon His Son (John 1:14)? We are in a spiritual war, not a physical one. Paul reminds us in Ephesians 6:12-17 that we wrestle against spiritual forces and must take the whole armor of God, including the sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God. Many Christians wear the helmet of salvation but neglect to wield the sword. A soldier at war without his sword is defenceless. We pray for discernment but leave our Bibles closed. Hebrews 4:12 says, “The word of God is quick and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword…” The Bible is the key to true discernment. Every dream, vision, and spiritual experience must first be filtered through the Word.
Many of us were raised on strong meat and are living testimonies to the power of the Word. But somehow, we expect the next generation to fulfill their divine destinies by drinking milk? Sincerely, brethren, the church has strayed far from its roots. Remember a time when little children could recite entire books of the Bible? Now, the average Christian cannot boast of having 10 verses memorized. Experts predict that China will have the largest Christian population by 2030, despite churches in Europe and North America closing. The underground church in China is thriving, driven by a hunger for the Word— a hunger we must instill in the next generation.
I’m grateful to the leadership of this church because we can see evidence that the Bible has always been prioritized. From our choice of name to our principles on purity, and even our slogans. The church is doing its part, we must also do ours as individuals and families. So, what then can we do as Christian households? As parents, we must first study to show ourselves approved unto God (2 Timothy 2:15). We must declare, like Joshua, that our household will serve the Lord. And finally, as children, we must honor our parents and love God enough to seek Him in the days of our youth, for one day, we too shall be parents (Ecclesiastes 12:1).
To focus on the cross, we must keep our eyes on the Word. The next time you hear the phrase “Alive by the Word,” remember it is not just a filler statement; it’s a testament to our foundation. It is an audible proclamation upon which the body of Christ is built. God is spirit, and those who worship Him must worship Him in spirit and truth. And so, unfortunately, if we’re not alive by the Word, then we’re dead in our spirit. May the Lord give us understanding.
